The women's volleyball team is now only two wins away from tying the season win record for the program. Union picked up one of their recent wins last Tuesday night at Russell Sage. Besides the win in the gym, the team managed to raise over $900 for breast cancer research. The four game victory moved the women to 21-6. Union won the first and dropped the second with scores of 30-28 and 26-30. However, the team came out and took care of business in the last two games and won with a score of 30-25 in both.

The Union offense was led by junior middle hitter Rachel Ormsby who posted 20 kills. She was also named NYSWCAA Player of the Week. Saratoga-native Erin Schumaker posted 11 kills on the match and freshman Erika VanValkenburg added 9. Junior outside hitter Julie LaSpina continues to increase her kills per game, as she added 14 kills to the offensive attack. Defensive specialist Veronica Mynders led the defense with 39 digs, as she was named NYSWCAA Defensive Player of the Week. Sophomore setter Jen Merinder paced the team with an impressive 46 assists.

The team traveled to Skidmore last weekend for the annual Skidmore Classic on Friday and Saturday. The Dutchwomen faced Ramapo first on Friday afternoon and swept the team in three with scores of 30-11, 30-21, and 30-18. They moved on to face Clarkson for the fourth time this season. Up until this point, the women were undefeated against Clarkson. They split the first two games as well as the last two with scores of 21-30, 30-28, 22-30, and 30-26. After getting down 10-2 in the fifth game, the women played catch up, but eventually dropped the game 15-13 along with the match. However, Sophomore Veronica Mynders reached a huge milestone as she broke the single-season record for digs.

After the disappointing loss, the team sought redemption, playing Colby-Sawyer who had beaten Clarkson the previous night. The women came out strong and swept the match with scores of 30-24, 30-22, and 30-17. This quick win sent the women to the Tournament Championship. Julie LaSpina and Rachel Ormsby led the attack with 12 kills each. Freshman Bridget Little also chipped in 9 kills and 6 blocks. Merinder recorded 37 assists and Mynders added 32 more digs to her defensive statistics.

The women faced Skidmore for the second time the season in the championship game. Skidmore proved a tough competitor again and Union could not keep up. They lost the match with scores of 27-30, 27-30, 31-29 and 26-30. As the women ran out of steam in the final game, their record dropped to 23-8 overall. Rachel Ormsby recorded 15 kills and an impressive 9 blocks on the match. LaSpina continued her hitting streak, leading the team with 18 kills in the match. Mynders recorded 27 digs for the Dutchwomen and Jen Merinder posted another remarkable game with 56 assists for the team. The women will wait to hear the final NYSWCAA rankings; however, they expect to travel to New York City this upcoming Saturday to compete with the best twelve teams in the state. They will also compete in their final home game on October 30th in the Viniar Athletic Center against SUNY Oneonta.
