The Dutchmen were back in action this week, when they traveled to Vassar and RPI. Vassar had a record of 6-4-2, (1-3-2) in the Liberty League and was currently in seventh place. The Dutchmen were in second place in the Liberty League with an overall record of 10-2-2, and a league record of 3-1-2.
The Dutchmen found themselves in a battle throughout the game. Both teams had several offensive chances which were stifled by each goalkeeper. In the end, each team did enough to keep the other team out of the net; playing to a 0-0 double overtime tie. Vassar's goalkeeper, Jason Cetel, made three game-saving saves in the first and second overtime period. Union goalkeeper, Rob Kramer, also came up with his fair share of game-saving saves. Kramer finished the game with ten saves, which preserved the shutout and ultimately the tie.
Union had two back to back chances to break the tie. In the 102nd minute John Bellock sent the ball to Dane Mellon who headed the ball on goal. Cetel barely got a piece of the ball and cleared it to safety. Three minutes later, in the 105th minute, Paul Angelo ripped a shot from the top of the box that hit the left post. Angelo followed his own shot and tried to knock the ball in, but Cetel had just enough time to step in front of the ball before it went into the net. Cetel in the end faced 18 shots on net, 6 of which came in the second overtime period.
Overall, Vassar controlled the play in the first half, sending six shots towards Kramer in the first half. Kramer and the Union defense did just enough to keep Vassar out of the net.
The Dutchmen traveled to play rival RPI this past weekend, where they battled to a scoreless 0-0 tie. For the Dutchmen, the tie means that their overall record stands at 10-2-3 with a Liberty League record of 3-1-3. RPI's record now stands at 6-5-4 and 2-3-2 in the Liberty League. Furthermore, the Dutchmen clinched the third seed in the Liberty League Tournament.
RPI dominated the first half, sending eight of their fourteen shots towards the RPI goalkeeper, Alex Penny. Dutchmen goalkeeper Rob Kramer smothered three scoring chances that RPI had in the first half. Kramer's effort in goal seemed to make the rest of the team step up their play in the second half, not allowing a shot on goal until the second overtime period. Each defense did just enough to keep the other team from getting good scoring opportunities. Dutchmen Jack Scott recorded the only shots on goal in extra time.
The Dutchmen travel to Utica and SUNY Oswego to finish out the season before the Liberty League Tournament.
