This past Sunday at Messa Rink, the men's hockey team played their first exhibition game in over a decade against Trois-Rivières (Canada). The game was controlled by the Dutchmen, outshooting their opponent 52-27, but could only muster out a tie.

The scoring began 7:25 into the first period when a shot from Mike Schreiber '10 rebounded off the Patriotes goaltender and landed on the stick of Stephane Boileau '11 who slid the puck into the net.

The game was tied at one until the latter part of the second period when a Patriote forward took a wrist shot from the right circle which, was initially saved by Union net minder Corey Milan '11; but found a way to trickle past the freshmen from Massachusetts for a power play goal.

Union took the lead early in the third period on a 4 on 4 opportunity when Adam Presizniuk '11 dug the puck out of the right corner, fed the puck to Michael Beynon '08, who slid the puck to his defensive partner Brendan Milnamow '09, who then fired the puck top shelf past the Trois-Rivières goaltenders glove.

The game seemed to be won by the Dutchmen, but they committed two penalties late in the third, which left them a 6 on 3 disadvantage after the Patriotes pulled their goalie. This did not fair well for the Dutchmen as a shot from the right circle by an opposing forward got past Milan with 4.8 seconds left to force overtime.

Union controlled the overtime, outshooting their opponent 5-0, but could not tally a goal, which ended the game in a 2-2 tie.

Based on Milan's excellent performance (25 saves) in his first outing as a Dutchmen, and their outshooting of their opponent by an outstanding number it seems as this is a game that the Dutchmen should've won. The main reason for why they did not pull out a win was their inability to convert on any of their six power play opportunities including a 5 on 3 advantage in the third period, while the Patriotes scored both of their goals on the power play.

Another reason for this disappointment was the untimely taking of penalties late in game by Torren Delforte '08 who received a 5 minute penalty for hitting from behind and a game misconduct, and Mario Valery-Trabucco '10 who received a penalty for roughing with a little over a minute left in regulation. Union also missed on some great scoring chances including a breakaway missed by Sam Bowles '08 off of a Brock Matheson '11 pass on the penalty kill.

The Dutchmen will next take the ice this Friday at 7pm at the Times Union Center for their Citizen Bank Governor's Cup matchup against ECAC rival RPI in a non-conference bout. The Engineers come into the game off of a 1-0 overtime win over Sacred Heart and a 3-2-0 record. Union will either face St. Lawrence or Colgate the next day, pending the outcome of the first games.
