Issue date: 10/25/07 Section: Sports
This past week of field hockey proved to be a demonstration of Union Field Hockey's resilience and pure talent. With a combined team effort, the Dutchwomen were able to clinch the fourth and final spot in the Liberty League Tournament.

The Dutchwomen's first match-up of the week took place on Tuesday when they took on Hartwick College. Hartwick has been a fierce competitor this season, beating out many of the other Liberty League competitors. With this being said, Union knew that they had to come out strong from the very first whistle.

Only six minutes into the game Union earned a corner and sophomore Lizzy Moran was able to tip the ball in for a goal. Taking the lead, Union continued to keep up its momentum. Just a few minutes later Moran took a pass from freshman Laurie Politz to put Union up 2-0. The Dutchwomen dominated the first half, keeping the ball at Hartwicks end. The girls also came out strong in the second half, scoring a goal in the first five minutes. Kelsey Powers re-bounded a shot by Caroline Tulp to give the Dutchwomen a 3-0 lead. The game ended 3-1, Union.

After Tuesday's win, the girls faced an important Liberty League weekend. They knew they had to win at least one of their games to make the esteemed playoffs.

On Friday the Dutchwomen took on #20 St. Lawrence. The game proved to be a fantastic game of field hockey to watch. The girls completely dominated St. Lawrence, keeping the ball in their defensive circle. However, despite Union's control, the "ball didn't roll their way." The first half proved to be a battle in front of St. Lawrence's goal. Union kept pounding balls into the circle, shooting corner after corner, but no one could manage to get the right touch on the ball. This battle led to a scoreless first half, with Union completely out shooting St. Lawrence 10-4.

Frustrated by the first half, Union came out even stronger to open the scoring in the second half. Freshman Kelsey powers netted a great goal off a feed from Lizzy Moran to put the Dutchwomen in the lead. After the goal, the Dutchwomen continued to keep up their intensity. However, the Saints managed to net a goal on a fast break to tie up the game. This battle continued into overtime with a 1-1 score. This game was a literal repeat of their match-up last year, and unfortunately just like last year, the Saints managed to squeeze past the Dutchwomen with a win in overtime, ending the score 1-2, St. Lawrence.
