The Union College Watson Fellowship Committee has recently announced its four nominees for the Fellowship this year: Robbie Flick, Joey Hunziker, Andrew Krauss, and Andy Laccetti.
The Thomas J. Watson Foundation grants about 50 fellowships each year across the country. The stipend for the Fellowship this year is $25,000. The awards will be announced by March 15, 2008.
Each year, all graduating seniors are eligible to participate in the rigorous application process. The Watson Fellowship Committee ultimately selects four nominees. Students are chosen based on their essays, project proposals, and interviews. The Program is not academic-based. Rather, it places a large emphasis on the individual and his or her passions.
The Watson Fellowship Committee is made up of faculty from various departments, including Mechanical Engineering Professor Ann Anderson, Chair of the French Department Charles Batson, History Professor Joyce Madancy, Chair of the Visual Arts Department David Ogawa, Director of Post-Graduate Fellowships Maggie Tongue, and Political Science Professor John Zumbrunnen.
Madancy, who chairs the Watson Fellowship Committee, stated that "the goal of the Watson Fellowship Program is to give students a year of personal discovery after graduating college before choosing a career path."
According to the Watson Fellowship Program's website, "The mission of the Thomas J. Watson Fellowship Program is to offer college graduates of unusual promise a year of independent, purposeful exploration and travel outside of the United States in order to enhance their capacity for resourcefulness, imagination, openness, and leadership and to foster their humane and effective participation in the world community."
Recipients of the Fellowship will receive $25,000 towards a twelve month project of their choice.
According to Madancy, "The only rules are that you are not allowed to go home and you are not allowed to travel to any country on the State Department's current travel warning list."
