Did you know that Eliphalet Nott is buried right down the street from Union?
Vale Cemetery, located in Vale Park, whose entrance is on Nott Terrace, is the home to many important people who helped to shape Union's history.
Though the cemetery has interred countless important historical figures, many of whose names students may recognize as street names throughout Schenectady, Union has its very own College plot.
According to Professor of History Robert Wells's article in the Encyclopedia of Union College History, in 1859, Union Treasurer and Professor Jonathan Pearson discussed with Eliphalet Nott and his wife, Urania, his idea of "transferring some or all of twenty-three acres of College land to the cemetery association."
Urania instead proposed that the cemetery be located near what is now Lenox Road. Though Nott believed that Vale was a better option, it was not until 1863 that he agreed to the plot.
As of 2000, there were 192 burials, and about a quarter of the spots remained available.
Buried along with Nott in the College plot are the likes of Carter Davidson, the thirteenth president of Union, Professor of Mathematics Isaac Jackson, and Eliphalet Nott Potter, who not only was the grandson of Nott and the seventh Union president, but also supported the beginning of the Concordiensis in 1877.
