This past Sunday, the brothers of Alpha Epsilon Pi (AEPi) ushered in the year with a re-chartering ceremony for the now up-and-running fraternity.
AEPi was shut down between 2003 and 2004 due to a lack of members, but an increasing interest gave way to its recent reinstitution at Union. The fraternity resurfaced on campus in 2005 and was granted chapter status in August of 2007. Twelve Brothers made up the re-founding class, followed in 2006 by an additional nine pledges.
Sunday's ceremony, which took place in College Park Hall Ballroom, marked the fraternity's reinstitution and the Union community's commitment to its success.
Parents, friends, and brothers gathered to commemorate the organization's past, in addition to its plans for the future. Speakers included Dean Trish Williams, founding Father Jason Oshins, Professor Brian Cohen, and Sigma Delta Tau president Jessica Rudin.
AEPi brother Benjamin Lehrer showed a chapter history slideshow with the fraternity's past events, and Supreme Master Gary Anderson presented the charter to AEPi's President, Dmitriy Geler, of the re-founding class.
The ritual material was presented by past Supreme Master Jon Pierce. Several brothers were recognized for chapter awards based on criteria such as involvement and commitment.
Rudin noted, "We're so thrilled to have AEPi back on campus. They are leaders both academically and philanthropically."
AEPi is ranked the number one fraternity in the nation for academics. According to member Dave Carr, "Half of our brothers are studying abroad."
The fraternity is considered to be in the top ten of the 69 fraternities in the North American Fraternity Conference. Union's chapter is one of 140 in the nation.
Cohen emphasized the importance of honor, telling the brothers, "Don't be afraid to wear your letters. Be proud."
This sense of pride has lead to a steady increase in involvement over the past year. The fraternity recently gained eight pledge members and now has a total of thirty-six Brothers.
