This past weekend was a very important one for the Union women's soccer team as the Dutchwomen faced off against Liberty League opponent Skidmore on Saturday. A loss against the Thoroughbreds would have kept Union out of the playoffs and ended their hopes for postseason, but fortunately the ending to Saturday's game was a happy one.
Union, led by junior forward Ashley Brown, controlled the match against Skidmore, especially during the first half and came out on top with a 2-1 victory. Brown had both goals in the game and both came off of headers. She struck first off a corner kick by Rachel Schneidman to give Union the lead in the 11th minute. Brown not only was a key offensive player in the match-up. She put in the effort on defense too, clearing a very dangerous corner kick before the Skidmore players could reach it.
Brown's next goal came in the second half off a throw-in by another key player in the game, senior defender Bridget Duffy. The score, now at 2-0, was not enough to make Skidmore throw the towel in, however. Union, with lower energy levels in the second half, allowed the Thoroughbreds to head one in off a corner kick. Anna Cerio got the goal for Skidmore, while Marianna Grigorov took the assist. Even with this slight lapse, overall Union's dominance of the game was apparent. The Dutchwomen held a 13-7 shot advantage and a 6-3 lead in corner kicks. Union's keeper Melissa McDonald recorded three saves for the win.
Sunday's game versus Hartwick was a different story altogether for the Dutchwomen. It was the most offense the team has put together since the first week of the season at the Heron Cup. Scoring a total of 6 goals, the win over Hartwick was the Dutchwomen's fourth straight and was their eight shutout of the season.
This time it was sophomore forward Allie Cuozzo's turn to score the two goals. Starting things off for Union, however, was senior captain Stephanie Cannuli who managed to finish off a blocked shot by Hartwick goalie Ashley Taylor.
Junior Chelsea Hargis was next in line to score, finding the back of the net from the middle of the field fifteen yards out. Freshman Katie McLean got the assist for Hargis, weaving a pass between defenders and setting Hargis up for the shot. Getting in on the scoring action again was Brown, who scored, just like on Saturday, off a header from Schneidman.
Finally, to round things out, freshman Meghan Harnett had her first career goal scoring off a corner kick as well, but this one was kicked by senior Cristin Tenety.
This coming weekend the Dutchwomen again have Saturday and Sunday games. The team will play Vassar at 2 PM on Saturday and RPI at 2 PM on Sunday. Both games will finish out Union's league schedule.
