The Union College Dutchwomen traveled to Burlington, VT this weekend to match up against the Vermont Catamounts. This is the first time the teams have competed since January 2005 when Union was defeated 3 - 0. Unfortunately the Catamounts stole two wins from the Dutchwomen, though the team has been showing improvements. The wins bring Vermont their third and fourth straight victory to open their 2007/08 season, already surpassing their total wins in the past two seasons.

The Dutchwomen came out with a slow start to Friday night's game, allowing the Catamounts 2 goals in the first period.

The team came together for the second and third period, controlling much of the play but was still unable to put the puck past the Vermont goalie.

Junior Gabi Wintner and Sophomore Brenna Malnar both had big opportunities, but were stopped cold by the home defenders. Vermont shut out Union on all 18 shots. Lundy Day made a solid 31 saves of 35 total shots for Vermont. The final score of the game was 4 - 0 Vermont.

The teams went head to head again Saturday afternoon, with the Dutchwomen making some progress. Though the Catamounts came out on top once again with a 4 - 1 win over the Dutchwomen, the game was closer than the score shows. Vermont dominated special teams, scoring on two of four power play opportunities, and killing all seven of Union's extra-player opportunities. In addition, Vermont had a short handed goal in the second period. Courtney Kerslake, a freshman from Sarnia, ON, brought Union's first goal of the season as well as her first collegiate goal. Kerslake buried the puck top shelf halfway through the third period, with the assist coming from senior Linnea Edwardson. Lundy Day came out with 26 saves of Vermont's 30 shots.

The Dutchwomen travel to Michigan next weekend, October 19 & 20, to take on the Wayne State Warriors in their final two games of pre season play.

The ECAC season begins on October 26 and 27 for the Dutchwomen when they play Brown and Yale at the Messa Rink. Coach Claudia Asano is pushing the girls to perform at their full potential and demands top dedication both in the classroom and on the ice. "I am most looking forward to our team getting better every day," stated Asano, "I anticipate that with more work we will continue to show progress."
