Volleyball remains undefeated at home with 4-0 weekend

Coming into this weekend 5-0 at home and 16-6 overall, the women's volleyball team was determined to let nothing stop them. And nothing did. The women took the Liberty League/SUNYAC Challenge in a similar fashion as their home invitational in September. The women have now won six straight matches.

The biggest game of the weekend for the team was their first against SUNY New Paltz. The women had lost to New Paltz in three at the Vassar tournament in September and were looking for redemption.

After dropping the first game 28-30, tension was high, and the possibility of a win seemed just out of reach. The games continued to be close and Union pushed out a win 32-30 in the second game. Now back even with their opponents, the women seemed even hungrier for a win and went up two to one with a 34-32 victory.

The team finally came out on fire in the fourth game and put the match away 30-26. Junior middle hitters Rachel Ormsby and Erin Schumaker and outside hitter Julia LaSpina led the offense with 17, 10 and 12 kills respectively. Ormsby and Schumaker also led the team in blocking. Ormsby recorded three solo blocks and two block assists while Schumaker summed three solo blocks and three block assists. The defense was led by sophomore libero Veronica Mynders who totaled 37 digs on the match. Sophomore setter Jen Merinder was the pinpoint of the win posting an impressive 45 assists.

After losing the first game to New Paltz, the women did not drop another game for the rest of the weekend, taking St. Lawrence in three games on Friday night.

Union swept the Saints quickly 30-22, 30-23, and 30-22. Once again, Ormsby led the offense with 15 kills, while Schumaker, recently nominated Liberty League Co-Performer of the Week, added ten. Both middle hitters each recorded four block assists while Schumaker added three solo blocks to her already impressive blocking stats. Once again, Veronica Mynders stayed strong in the back row with 20 digs and Jen Merinder kept the team in step with 42 assists.
