Men's Hockey sweeps Ferris State in opening weekend

Issue date: 10/18/07 Section: Sports
Students and parents were greatly entertained this parents' weekend as the Men's Hockey team captured two wins against visiting Ferris State by the scores of 2-0 and 4-1

In the first game, the Dutchmen set the tempo early in the first period by throwing the body around and pounding the Bulldogs. Union controlled the majority of the play, outshooting their opponent 12-2 in the first period, but there were no goals in the period.

The first frame was pretty uneventful but, with under a minute left in the first the Dutchmen penalty kill applied some unexpected offensive pressure, but could not convert.

Union came out hitting hard in the second period led by assistant captain Michael Beynon '08, who early in the period threw down three Bulldogs in a matter of ten seconds. But, Ferris State controlled the earlier stages of the second as Union committed two penalties but killed them both off. After a great job by the penalty kill unit, the Dutchmen offense struck for the first goal of the game with a little under 13 minutes in the second as Adam Presizniuk '11 slid a crossing pass to Mario Valery-Trabucco '10 who chipped the puck top shelf past the Ferris State goalie.

Later in the period Union struck once again as Jason Walters '10 broke down the left side of the Bulldog defense and passed the puck to Torren Delforte '08 who deposited the puck into the net for an easy one-time goal.

In the third period, it seemed like Union head coach Nate Leamans' game plan was for his team to lay back and ice the puck to help conserve their lead. Leamans' game plan worked with the help of the Dutchmen's' defensive unit and goaltender Justin Mrazek '08, who blocked 18 shots in his first shutout of the season, as they went on to win the season opener.

Keys to the game were Union's hard hitting and aggressive tactics along with domination in the face-off circle led by Sam Bowles '08. Also, the Dutchmen blue liners did not allow Ferris State to have any good transition which basically depleted their offensive attack.
