Count women's volleyball in as one of the many Union College fall sports teams having major success this season. Along with football, field hockey and men's soccer, the volleyball team added games to the win column this weekend. The team's record has improved to 11-4 overall and remains tied at 6-0 with R.I.T. to top the NYSWCAA.

Coming off an undefeated (4-0) weekend at their home invitational last Friday and Saturday, the women traveled to Williams on Tuesday night to take on one of the best teams in the NESCAC. Union jumped out ahead of Williams in the first game 9-3 but could not hold on to their lead as they lost the first two games 30-22 and 30-28. Union then took the third game 30-24; it was the first game Williams ever dropped to Union in the history of the program. But Williams came out too strong for the team in the fourth game and won 30-15.

The team was led by sophomore setter Jen Merinder who summed 32 assists and 14 digs. Offensively, junior middle hitter Rachel Ormsby led the team with 13 kills and 6 blocks. She was also named Liberty League Performer of the Week. Erin Schumaker, another junior middle hitter, added another 6 blocks and 10 kills. The defense was led by Veronica Mynders who wracked up 29 digs.

After falling to 9-4, the team was determined to go 2-0 this past Saturday at Hamilton as they took on both Hamilton and Clarkson. And so it went. Although they took both teams down in three games, the wins did not come easily. Union won the first game quickly 30-21, but the team was forced to make a comeback after allowing Hamilton to make a run in the second game. The Dutchwomen won it 30-28. They finished the match and added a win with the third game 30-21. Junior outside hitter Julie LaSpina and Erin Schumaker led the offense, each adding 10 kills. Jen Merinder kept the offense going with 41 assists. The defense was led by libero Mynders with 27 digs, Schumaker with nine blocks, and freshman Burnt Hills native, Bridget Little with eight block assists.

Their win against Clarkson was no easier as they won the first game 30-22 and pulled off the same come back style in the second 31-29. After jumping out to a 13-3 lead in the third game, and holding them off 21-9, the women had to hold strong and ended up winning 30-28. Merinder paced the offense again with 30 assists as Schumaker led with eight kills and Ormsby added another seven. Mynders led the defense once again with 20 digs with freshman Erika VanValkenburg on her heels with 19.

These wins moved the women's volleyball team to 11-4 and to the best start of a season since 1989. The team will host an evenly-matched Middlebury on Tuesday night at 7pm in Viniar Athletic Center. They will also travel to Oneonta next weekend for the second time this season. They are scheduled to take on SUNY Geneseo and Russell Sage on the first day of the tournament.
