This past weekend was a rough one for the Union women's soccer team. Going into the weekend undefeated, the Dutchwomen had high hopes to keep their number 5 ranking among Division III schools in the nation strong as they faced up against William Smith, the 13th ranked team in the nation, on Friday and Hamilton on Saturday. It seems, however, an undefeated season for the Dutchwomen was just not meant to be.

On Friday, the William Smith Herons kept Union off the scoreboard, the first time this entire season and scored three on the Dutchwomen, who before had only let in one goal this season as well. The scoring began with a little less than 20 minutes left in the half, when William Smiths' Megan Stevens managed to connect off a cross from Brelynn Nasypany. Stevens shot landed in the goal and gave William Smith the first goal of the match. The Heron's next goal was a real heartbreaker for the Dutchwomen, as Courtney Peters headed one in with just thirty seconds left in the half. Even with William Smith's 2-0 lead in the first half, the shots on goal were very evenly matched for both sides, but Union just had a tough time delivering.

Junior Ashley Brown had the best chance of the half for the Dutchwomen, but the Heron keeper, Alice Bins, made a diving stop that kept Union's tally at 0. The final and third goal of the game came in the middle of the second half from yet another header, but this time Nayspany got the goal instead of the assist. The game ended at a score of 3-0.

While the Dutchwomen did turn out a better performance on Saturday against Hamilton, it still seemed like the wind had been taken out of their sails and the 1-0 loss showed it. The Continental's Anne Gravely scored about 25 minutes into the first half, giving Hamilton the edge over Union. Union put up a fight though, outshooting Hamilton 12-10 and taking the advantage in corner kicks at 5-3. Freshman Caitlin O'Donnell led the Dutchwomen in shots, having three in total. The stats just weren't enough and Union still couldn't finish. The game ended with a score of 1-0.

Now 0-2 in the Liberty League, the Dutchwomen will use the coming week to bounce back from these tough losses. This weekend, Union has just one match on Saturday versus Utica at 1 PM.
