Over the past weekend Union College Cycling traveled to the University of Massachusetts and Jiminy Peak for a series of mountain bike races. Things started off slow with Sara Jacobson '10 having to quit her Women's B cross country race after 1 lap due to respiratory issues.
However, Brendan Truscott then came through with an excellent Men's C cross country race; spending the first two laps of three going toe to toe with a University of Vermont rider, Truscott lost time on the back side of the course on the final lap, and was behind two UVM riders. Truscott endured though, as he powered his way to the uphill finish, passing the second UVM rider in a sprint finish to claim 2nd place.
Steven Hopengarten '09 had a solid Men's B Cross Country race, finishing 20th out of 40, but did not claim any team points. He recovered though and had a good Men's C Dual Slalom race, qualifying in seventh and advancing to the semi finals in the head to head format, only to lose to a UVM rider and took 7th in the event.
Sunday was a better day for the team as Brendan Truscott took a victory in the Men's C short track race, leading all but 2 laps of 17. Later in the day Forrest Clifton '10 and Steven Hopengarten dominated the Men's C Downhill races, claiming 1st and 3rd respectively on the long and twisty Jiminy Peak downhill course.
Union finished the weekend with 56 team points, launching them to fourth in the Eastern Collegiate Cycling Conference Division II standings. For more info on Union College Cycling visit http://www.vu.union.edu/~cycling/
