The Union College Dutchmen kicked off an important weekend against Hobart College. Hobart was ranked 5th in Division III soccer, while the Dutchmen came in ranked 21st. In an emotional game, the Dutchmen proved that they can compete at the same level as the best teams in Division III soccer.

The Dutchmen offense started the game on fire as they scored all four goals in the first half. Dutchmen Senior Tripp Pietrak opened up the scoring in the 14th minute when he received the ball from Chris Poey. Pietrak beat the Hobart defender and did not hesitate to shoot under pressure. Hobart goalkeeper got a finger on the ball but it was not enough to deflect Tripp's powerful shot.

In the ensuing minutes after the Dutchmen had opened up the scoring, Hobart was looking to rebound and tie the score. Union goalie, Rob Kramer came up with enormous saves to keep the score at 1-0. In the 23rd minute, Matt Wentworth sent the ball to Pietrak who netted his second goal of the game.

In the 31st minute, Pietrak capped off his hat trick when Ryan Banagan dribbled the ball through Hobart's powerful midfield. Pietrak received the ball and chipped it over Hobart's goalkeeper who came out to cut off Tripp's angle. Ryan Banagan added an insurance goal before halftime when he scored an unassisted goal in the 41st minute.

The second half featured great saves from Dutchmen goalie Rob Kramer. Kramer recorded five of his eight saves in the second half for his 3rd shutout of the season. Both teams played to a scoreless second half to secure the victory. Hobart's powerful offense out shot the Dutchmen 14-12; however, Hobart could not keep Tripp Pietrak from finding the net on three separate occasions.

The Dutchmen continued their winning ways when they played a league match against rival Hamilton College. The game featured back and forth soccer between both teams as they needed overtime to break the scoreless tie. In the 98th minute, Tripp Pietrak broke free and shot the ball just outside the box. The ball hit off of the post and the rebound came strait to Chris Poey, who knocked it past the Continentals goalkeeper.

In the first ninety minutes of the game, the Dutchmen had three great chances off of corner kicks to break the tie. Similarly, the Continentals had two chances to break the tie themselves. One came off of a direct kick which narrowly sailed over the crossbar and then off of a corner kick that was directed a few inches wide of the net. Union goalkeeper Rob Kramer had five saves for the Dutchmen, as he recorded his 4th shutout this season.

After an emotional weekend, the Dutchmen stand at an overall record of 7-0-0, and a league record of 2-0-0. Their win against Hobart not only kept their hope of an undefeated season alive, but it showed to Division III teams that they shouldn't be underestimated. They travel to play Elmira and Babson this week.
