"Master plan" to evaluate future of campus

Issue date: 9/27/07 Section: News
A team of faculty and administrators from numerous campus departments are working in conjunction with an executive committee and planning firm, Dober Lidsky Craig Associates, to update the master plan of Union's future utilization of resources and facilities.

The main goal of the master plan is to evaluate the campus's current buildings and layout and create plans for future expansion and renovation accordingly.

The master plan is revised every ten years to comply with changing needs and ideas on campus.

According to Union facilities head Loren Racinski, "[the] master plan is used as a tool for shaping the college's facilities needs, looking into the future."

The key component to the master plan is space.

Last spring, Union hired planning firm, Dober Ledsky Craig Associates, to head the operation. Since then, the firm has been working on the "analysis" phase of the plan. This phase has included several interviews with students and administrators to determine the campus's chief needs and goals, and has examined the spatial layout of the college's buildings.

Most recently, the firm has been "gleaning information on the existing conditions, building usage, etc. of the campus from all departments," explained Rucinski.

The analysis phase will provide the planning committees with enough information to maximize efficiency in their planning.

"Planning and action are always much more effective when you actually understand your present circumstance," stated President Stephen Ainlay.

Once evaluation is completed, the planning committees hope to translate the gathered information into plans for renovation and increased campus efficiency. The planning committee, composed of faculty and representatives from a multitude of campus departments, also proposes new ideas and recommendations to the executive board.

As Rucisnski explained, "[The planning committee] is sort of a sounding board of ideas [and] needs."
