Gym Class Heroeskeeps energy flowing

Issue date: 9/27/07 Section: News
Last Friday, roughly 1,000 Union students went to see Gym Class Heroes in the Field House. Fresh from the MTV Video Music Awards, where they won the award for Best New Artist of 2007, Gym Class Heroes delivered a fantastic performance.

The show opened with DJ Abilities, who got things rolling on the right track, spinning Hip-Hop and Nirvana at the same time.

The Pack kept energy and spirits high and got the crowd properly worked up for the main attraction.

The last opening act featured a relatively new artist by the name Tyga. Appearing on Kayne West's Fall Out Boy Remixed album, Tyga is the younger cousin of Gym Class Heroes' frontman, Travis.

Although MTV considered Gym Class Heroes to be the hottest new artist of the year, Travis and his band have been playing gigs for the last 10 years. The band formed in Geneva, NY, when Travis and drummer Matt McGinley were still in high school and shared gym class with each other.

After releasing "For the Kids..." in 2001, the band grew in popularity and played at Warped Tour in 2003 and 2004, when the event was in its prime.

By 2005, the band added Disashi Lumumba-Kasongo on guitar and Eric Roberts on bass to release "The Papercut Chronicles." With the hit single Taxi Driver, a song which uses emo band names as lyrics to tell the story of a (death) cab ride, the band caught the attention of Fall Out Boy, who eventually added them to the Fueled by Ramen label.

Anyone who went to the Wold House organized Fall Out Boy concert at Northern Lights in 2005 should remember Gym Class Heroes as the opening act. Over the last two years, the band released another album, "As Cruel as School Children," and exploded onto the music scene, launching their own concert circuit and a bevy of awards.

Gym Class Heroes took the stage, waving their flag while 1,000 students roared with cheers. The band encouraged everyone to sing along to "Taxi Driver," cutting the mic and letting everyone chant in unison: "Just put on this coheed and fallout/Boy meets girl jimmy eat world/But Schlep eats pills till he's all out!"
