Meet the 2008 Presidential candidates: A quick look at the future leaders of America

Sam Brownback (Republican - Kansas)

Evan Duffy

Issue date: 9/20/07 Section: World Views
Brownback received his law degree from the University of Kansas in 1982. From 1986 to 1993, he served as the Kansas Secretary of Agriculture. He became a representative in the United States House of Representatives in 1995 - but was elected to the United States Senate the following year and has served as a Kansas Senator ever since.

IRAQ: After his recent trip to Iraq, Brownback maintains that the region is quite unstable - however, he notes a sense of hopefulness in countless Iraqi citizens that one day they will live in a new, safe and stable, Iraqi society. Brownback believes that we must derive a plan that will turn the country over to its citizens, allowing American influence to wane in the following decade. If elected, brownback vows to work with American and Iraqi leaders to find a solution that protects the future of Iraq, and the pride and dignity of its citizens.

HEALTH CARE: Brownback believes our health care system can thrive with increased consumer choice, consumer control and real competition. This allows consumers to "shop around" for the best prices and plans for their health care needs.

He argues the existing health insurance market forces consumers to pay for extra benefits in their premiums - think: aromatherapy - which increases the cost of coverage. Instead of this flawed system, Brownback believes consumers should be allowed to choose from the health care coverage plans that are tailored to fit their families' needs and values.

Brownback offers a proposal that would allow consumers to have more control over the use of their personal health records (PHRs). In maintaining their PHRs, consumers can create a lifetime electronic medical record (EMR), while at the same time ensuring their right to privacy.

He specifically argues against socialized medicine because the model has shown to deprive consumers of access to life-saving treatments. Brownback believes socialized medicine is simply inconsistent with the spirit of the American people to be free from unwanted government intervention. Essentially, Brownback's health care solution puts the consumer in the driver seat, not a "big brother" government.
