While the Union College field hockey team may appear young, it is not apparent in its style of play.
Starting five freshmen, the team kicked off its season opener with a 13-0 win over Regis College, a rarity in field hockey scoring. Nine individuals on the team tallied goals for the Dutchwomen, demonstrating the depth and ability of the team in its entirety. Junior Goalie Liz Stanford also tallied her first shutout of the season.
With a "W" under their belt, the Dutchwomen faced #14 Williams College on Tuesday night. In the first half, Union outplayed Williams, forcing corners and keeping the Eph's defense on their toes.
Union opened the scoring when freshman Kelsey Powers scored twenty-one minutes in off a pass from fellow freshman forward, Tyler Willey. However, with less than one minute left in the first half the Eph's managed to power through Union's defense and put a point on the board.
Going into the second half, both teams were fired up and eager to take the lead. Merely six minutes into the second half, the Eph's managed to tally another goal.
However, Union battled-back, keeping the ball in William's half for the remainder of the game. With less than five seconds on the clock, Wiley tipped in another goal for Union, forcing the game into overtime. This thriller of a game, however, ended sadly when the Ephs scored with only two minutes remaining in overtime, ending the game at 3-2.
The high intensity game against Williams, led Union into its first liberty league match up against Skidmore College on Friday afternoon.
While the first half of the game ended 1-0 Skidmore, the girls came out for a strong second half. Within seven minutes of the half sophomore Keelin Shurek scored off a pass from junior Mallory Mason to tie up the game. However, with only a little over fifteen minutes in regulation time, Skidmore tallied a second goal. Union put up a good fight, but as the seconds ticked by they couldn't manage to capture the victory.
Facing two heartbreakers, Union traveled to WPI to play on Saturday night. The first half of the game was back and forth, both teams looking to gain control of their offense.
Finally, nearing the end of the first half, freshman forward Caroline Tulp netted the lone goal of the first half, giving Union a 1-0 lead. WPI came out hard in the second half, but it wasn't enough to stop the Dutchwomen. Molly Osborn scored fifteen minutes into the second half, followed by another goal three minutes later from Mallory Mason off a pass from Kelsey Powers. The game ended with a 3-1 win over WPI.
The Dutchwomen are now 2-2 with wins against Regis and WPI. The girls play next on Wednesday afternoon at Utica College.
