The Union College women's volleyball team moved their overall record to 9-3 this weekend at their annual Union Invitational in the Viniar Athletic Center and Memorial Field House.

The team was looking to pick up more wins after their 2-2 split at the Vassar tournament last weekend. After finishing in second place and going 3-1 in the Oneonta Tournament at the beginning of September, the team was hungry for a championship. They started off strong Friday night with two wins.

The team, led by junior captains Kait Evans and Bridget Graham, dominated Plattsburgh (30-22, 30-27, 30-22) and quickly rolled over Utica in their later game (30-19, 30-21, 30-15). Burnt Hills native Rachel Ormsby (junior) and Saratoga native Erin Schumaker (junior) led the team in kills with seven a piece. Ormsby added ten blocks as well. Sophomore libero Veronica Mynders summed 22 digs and four aces, while setter Jen Merinder held strong with 30 assists.

The women came out strong Saturday morning as well, quickly taking a match from Oswego in three games (30-21, 30-11, 30-27). Union moved on to make it a perfect weekend in their last game against Hartwick. Union had already taken a match from Hartwick at the Oneonta Tournament in five games earlier this season. The Union women won the first game 30-21 and lost a tense second game 31-33; it was the only game dropped by the girls all weekend.

They went on to win the next two 30-21 and 30-27. Sophomore setter Merinder led the team once again wracking up 55 assists and 18 digs. Freshman outside hitter Erica VanValkenburg led the offense with 16 kills and Shumaker added 15, while Ormsby contributed another 14. Ormsby and Schumaker also led the team in blocks. Ormsby posted four solo blocks and three block assists while Schumaker added three solo blocks and six block assists. Veronica Mynders and junior defensive specialist Kait Evans led the defense with 26 and 20 digs respectively. VanValkenburg added another 16 digs along with her offensive performance. Mynders added 4 aces to her serving stats.

Ormsby was named MVP of the tournament above six others on the all-tournament team, one being her freshman sister, Rebecca, from Skidmore. Vassar was the only other team at the tournament to finish with a perfect 4-0 record.

Head coach Sandy Collins had not had a team go 4-0 in a tournament for more than two years. Collins is now the most winning coach in Union Volleyball history and the team hopes to put her record out of reach.

The women look to add another match to the win column on Tuesday at Williams. It will be a tough match against a program that has made seven NCAA tournament appearances. The team will also travel to Hamilton on Saturday for their annual Clarkson/Hamilton tri-match and look to take home two more wins. The Dutchwomen's next home game will be on September 25th in Viniar Athletic Center as they take on Middlebury.
