Women's Soccer tops 5th ranked Rochester and St. John Fischer

Issue date: 9/20/07 Section: Sports
What a week it was for the Union women's soccer team! Going into the weekend ranked 12th, the Dutchwomen faced off against the 5th team in the nation, the University of Rochester, on Saturday.

The Yellowjackets, however, proved to be no match for the momentum that Union has gained so far in the season. In only the 8th minute of the game, junior defender Sara Wilson, who has certainly shown this year how much of a threat she is on corner kicks, followed through, yet again, on a corner service from fellow junior Chelsea Hargis. Wilson headed the ball into the back of the net to give Union its first goal.

After scoring that first goal, Wilson seemed more determined than ever to keep Rochester from putting one of their own into the back of the net. When Rochester almost had a shot on an open net later in the half, it was Wilson who hustled her way to the front of the goal to block the shot and keep Union's shutout.

Even though much of the action in the second half was on Rochester's end (the Yellowjackets outshot the Dutchwomen 10-4), the Union players knew how to finish when they had a chance.

Freshman Katie McLean showed no signs of those first-year nerves, and put away two with the help of sophomore Allie Cuozzo and Hargis. McLean's first goal found the lower right corner of the net after Cuozzo beat two defenders and put the ball at her feet. McLean's second goal, however, was off a corner kick serviced again by Hargis.

While Rochester did have several opportunities to finish, none of these opportunities ended with a goal thanks to the hard work of sophomore goalie Melissa McDonald. In fact, Union set a new program record with the 3-0 win, adding their 5th consecutive shutout to the season, which surpassed their old record of 4 consecutive shutouts.

It was obvious by Sunday's game that while Union had won the battle against Rochester, the previous day's game had certainly taken a toll on the Dutchwomen. Union matched up against St. John Fisher, but was unable to score until the second half. Fortunately, however, with a pick-me-up from the Cuozzo sisters, Union came out on top.
