I don't know what Activision was thinking when they came out with Marvel Nemesis for the Xbox, but a more apt name could not have been given. Marvel Nemesis is perhaps the most banal video game to ever come out featuring some of the most renowned super heroes.
Originally, I was excited by just the concept of a fighting game starring Marvel superheroes and villains on the Xbox. I was expecting everything that had been delivered by Marvel vs. Capcom and then some. But I could not have been more off the mark.
There are only two real improvements in this game over Marvel vs. Capcom. The first is the 3D environments. The second is the ability to smash or throw pretty much anything in that environment. Everything else in this game can be described at best as mediocre. Yes, the storyline was more developed than that of most fighting games, but it made an alien invasion sound boring. And everything from character selection to variety of character attacks was trumped by Marvel vs. Capcom. There are no unique character moves, and stronger characters have the advantage of being able to throw cars at their opponents, while weaker characters have to slug it out, which takes a ridiculous amount of time. Marvel Nemesis gets two stars out of five for lack of effort.
