The Men's Swimming and Diving Team had a great weekend at their conference championships, the UNYSCSA Championships, last weekend at LeMoyne College.
The boys traveled up to Syracuse last Wednesday to begin their crazy weekend of competition.
The team ended up in fourth place at the end of the weekend. Out of the 15 participating teams Union scored 938 points, behind Ithaca who had 971, RPI who scored 1,121.5 and first place Alfred who accumulated 1,197.5 points.
Events began on Thursday with the preliminary session in the morning and finals taking place at night. At finals, Union performed well. The first event of the night was the 200 freestyle relay in which Union tied with LeMoyne for second place. The team was made up of Kevin Kewin, Steven Schapp, Kevin Jung and Todd Herman.
Five Union swimmers participated in the next event, the 500 yard freestyle. In an impressive finish, Schapp won the event, closely followed by Brian Scarlett in second. Schapp's time was a National's "B" cut, giving him NCAA consideration. Lucas Tiziani also placed tenth while Shane Hubbell and Jack Honor finished 12th and 16th respectively.
The 200 Individual Medley was the next event. Kewin won the event by four seconds, finishing with a 1:51.98. The time is an "A" cut, which qualifies him for Nationals. In the 50 yard Freestyle, Todd Herman finished in sixth place with a 22.11. Also making finals in the event was Kevin Jung and Chris Heske who placed 18th and 21st respectively.
Union Diver Steve Cohen dove well in the last meet of his career. He placed sixth in the one meter diving competition with a score of 343.80, scoring 24 points toward the team cumulative score.
In an unusual circumstance, the "B" 400 yard Medley Relay actually beat the "A" relay. The "A" Relay placed fourth place overall. The relay was made up of Brian Scarlett, Conor Donahoe, Tiziani and Schapp; the team finished in a time of 3:34.32. The "B" Relay placed first out of the B relays. The team of Kewin, Nathan Seder, Jung and Heske finished in a time of 3:34.04.
