Science fiction adventure movie, “Allegiant,” was recently released in theatres on March 18, 2016. It is the third film installment in the “Divergent” series based on Veronica Roth’s bestselling novels. This movie received mixed reviews from movie critics and did not perform as well as expected in theatres. This film franchise seems to be the least successful of the other large film series such as “Harry Potter,” “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games.”
Directed by famous German film writer and director, Robert Schwentke and written by author of prolific teenage angst novel, “Perks of Being a Wallflower,” Stephen Chbosky, “Allegiant follows Tris and her adventures in searching for freedom in a society overrun by dictators and factions.
The film stars Golden Globe nominee and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager” lead actress, Shailene Woodley. Playing alongsside Woodley is “The Fault In Our Stars” eyecandy actor, Ansel Elgort and British actor and new teen hearthrob, Theo James. The film is packed with various other big wig actors and actresses, such as Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts.
The two prior films show a dystopian Chicago where people are split up into different “factions” based on certain traits that people have. The main characters Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) and Four (Theo James) decide to explore the world outside of the barriers of the city. The “factionless” leader Evelyn (Naomi Watts) took control over the dictator-like character Janine (Kate Winslet).
Evelyn orders public executions of Janine’s loyalists and shuts down access to the wall, but Tris and Four are able to escape with her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort), friend Christina (Zoe Kravitz) and comrade Peter (Miles Teller). They reach an area that looks like Mars and are soon picked up by futuristic-looking soldiers and are brought to a utopian area, which used to be Chicago O’Hare International Airport.
Once they get there, Tris is considered the only “100% pure” person from Chicago, which makes her the most important figure in an extensive plan to restore humanity after a genetic experiment had gone wrong. Back in Chicago, a civil war breaks out between Evelyn’s government and former faction leader Johanna (Octavia Spencer). Tris and Four realize this is happening through a futuristic portal that only allows them to view Chicago, while others cannot view them.
As with its predecessing films, “Allegiant” ends with the lead actors and actresses facing an uncertain future, leaving viewers to ponder the characters’ fates and desiring for closure. Personally, I found this film to be interesting because of the vivid graphics and classical music. I believe that they enhanced the viewing of this film greatly. I was on the edge of my seat in suspense due to the many action scenes throughout the film. I definitely would recommend this movie for people that tend to enjoy futuristic action scenes featuring strong characters.
The fourth and final installment of the “Divergent” series, which will finally conclude Tris’ journey, is set to release in theaters on June 9, 2017.
