On Monday, Feb. 6, Union will host Le Ly Hayslip, a Vietnam War survivor and activist who is working to repair relations between Vietnamese and Americans.
In 1988, Le Ly Hayslip founded the East Meets West Foundation, a humanitarian organization focused on rebuilding lives for both American and Vietnamese citizens who experienced the War. Much of her work concentrates on fostering opportunities for American Vietnam War veterans and former fighters to cope with the stress of war by returning to Vietnam to build schools and medical facilities for women, children and the disabled.
The success of her work has gained attention from celebrities like filmmaker and Vietnam veteran Oliver Stone. After reading Hayslip’s book, When Heaven and Earth Changed Places, Stone decided to fund the building of a homeless shelter for Vietnamese children in Hayslip’s hometown of Da Nang.
At 5 p.m. on Monday, there will be a dinner and discussion with Le Ly Hayslip at Green House, where students can enjoy Vietnamese cuisine and have the opportunity to discuss Hayslip’s work, life experiences and activism.
Following the dinner, she will speak at the Nott Memorial on the work she does to restore peace; the impacts of Buddhism; and the ways in which her life experiences have impacted her politically. Campus Action, the Asian Student Union, World Around U and Green House are sponsoring the event.
