Volleyball bounces back at Union Invitational

The Dutchwomen huddle up during the Union Invitational.

After a disappointing 1-3 record at the Bomber Invitational two weekends ago, the Union volleyball team bounced back with a 3-1 record at the Union Invitational this past weekend.

Union went up against Hartwick on Friday in the first match of the invitational. The Hawks got off to a quick start as they took the first game of the match thanks to a big 15-6 run midway through the game. The Dutchwomen fell behind early in the second game 9-3, but mounted a comeback to tie the game at 13. They kept it going as they took the game to a close 25-22 victory. Union took a 2-1 lead in the match in the third game with a convincing 25-20 win, and sealed the 3-1 victory in the fourth game with a come-from-behind 25-20 victory.

Later that evening the team went up against Sage, who they had beaten earlier in the season 3-0. Things would be the same this time around as the Dutchwomen cruised to another 3-0 victory by the scores of 25-20, 25-18 and 25-11.

Union continued playing tremendously into Saturday with a 3-1 win over Oswego. They jumped out to a 12-2 lead over Oswego thanks to some excellent serving from Casey Tepper ‘14 and Erika VanValkenburg ‘11, and some solid play upfront by Eve Richards ‘12 and Mary Foley ‘12. The Dutchwomen would finish the game with a 25-16 win.

Things were different in the second game, with Oswego holding the lead most of the game and pulling out a 25-17 win over the Dutchwomen. However, the third game was all Union as they took the game 25-17. The Dutchwomen continued their stellar play in the fourth game as they took a 15-10 lead, followed by a 10-1 run to close out the game and the match.

Union looked for the weekend sweep against SUNY Cortland, but they were no match for the Red Dragons who took the match 3-0.

Cortland took the first game with an easy 25-10 victory, but the Dutchwomen played better in the second game taking an early 4-2 lead. The game stayed close for a while, but the Red Dragons pulled away for a 25-15 win. In the third and final game, the Dutchwomen trailed 10-9 at one point, but were unable to tie the game, allowing the opposition to pull away with a 25-15 victory.

The team will head to New Jersey this weekend for matches with Arcadia and Farleigh Dickinson.
