Union splits meets at Springfield

The Union Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving teams continued their winter competition season last weekend by traveling to Springfield College (MA) to compete in a double duel meet in a thirteen-event format against Springfield and Hartwick College.

Kaleigh Ahern ‘12 was named Liberty League Co-Swimmer of the Week.

Both teams split in their overall meet victories. The women won their competition against Hartwick with a score of 133-104, and fell to Springfield 98-143. The men gained a win over Springfield College 143.5-99.5, and lost to Hartwick 106-134. The Dutchwomen improved their record to 1-4, while the Dutchmen are now 1-1-3.

On the women’s side, the competition began with Union scoring four second-place finishes, and Springfield taking first in all events but the first relay. The first victory was achieved in 200-yard backstroke, where Union overwhelmed the competition with first through fourth place finishes. Sarah Bradner ‘14 clocked in at 2:14.49, winning by over three seconds. Following her were Emily Opolski ‘13, Annora Brennan ‘11, and Lexi Bascom ‘12.

The 500-yard freestyle saw similar victories, as Danielle Young ‘14 won the event with a time of 5:25.88. Madeline Ashworth ‘14 and Suzanne Foley ‘12 followed with second and third place finishes. Kaleigh Ahern ‘13 finished up the women’s victories, winning by a staggering 4.63 seconds in the 200-yard breaststroke with a time of 2:29.73.

The men’s team began the meet with three consecutive second-place finishes until the 50-yard freestyle in which Kevin Jung ‘11 tied for first place with Hartwick’s John Wojtech at 22.61 seconds.

The next Union victory was achieved in the 200-yard butterfly, where Matt Wahl ‘13 won by a nearly three second margin as he clocked in at 2:01.86.

Jung continued his success, again tying for first in the 100-yard freestyle with Springfield’s Scott Mackstutis with a time of 49.27. Brian Scarlett ‘11 furthered the winning streak with a victory in the 200-backstroke with a time of 1:59.65. Tim Cameron ’14 followed with a second place finish.

Union returns to the pool on Friday when they host the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at the Alumni Gym Pool at 6 p.m.
