Dutchwomen get swept away by Ivy League competition

Union’s women’s hockey team was beaten twice this past weekend, making it six losses on the trot.

The Dutchwomen opened the weekend with a 5-0 loss to the Crimson of Harvard on Friday before losing 4-1 to Dartmouth the following afternoon, with junior Kelly Alyea scoring the solitary Dutchwomen goal of the weekend.

Kate Gallagher ‘12 made 41 saves against Dartmouth, her third 40+ save performance of the season.

The Dutchwomen had a good start to the weekend, holding the Crimson in the first period to a 0-0 score line. However, this didn’t last as Harvard defender Josephine Pucci roofed a shot from an acute angle to put the visitors ahead.

A minute later, Jillian Dempsey doubled the visitor’s lead, putting the puck into an unguarded net after Lyndsey Fry passed right across the crease on a two-on-zero chance down low.

The Crimson managed one more tally in a period they dominated, out-shooting the Dutchwomen 16-4.

It was as if both teams were content to go home after Harvard proved their superiority in the second period. Katherine Chute and Lindsey Fry added two more goals to the Crimson’s total, on a night where the visitors out shot the home side 42-10, proving their dominance.

The next night seemed to be only marginally better for Union.  Once again, the game started well for the Dutchwomen, with Alyea scoring on a four-on-four, five minutes into the first period.

The Dutchwomen took this lead into the locker room despite being out-shot 13-6 in the opening frame.

The Big Green came out in the second period looking to find the back of the net.

They did just that, as it took only four minutes for Jenna Hobeika to even the score with a power-play goal.

Kelly Alyea ‘12 scored Union’s lone goal on the weekend.

The game remained tied for the next nine minutes, although Dartmouth controlled the play.  Sally Komarak would eventually break the deadlock, with Kelly Trunzo, who has a phenomenal record against Union, picking up the assist.

Kelly Foley scored with two minutes remaining to round off the second Union second-period collapse of the weekend. The Big Green outshot the Dutchwomen 25-3 in this decisive period.

Eight minutes into the third period, Jenna Hobeika scored for Dartmouth and finally put the game to bed.

Junior goaltender Kate Gallagher put in a solid performance, making 41 saves in the game, which was her third 40+ save performance of the season. She made a total of 52 saves on the weekend.

It’s tough to take away any positives from this weekend where the Dutchwomen were out shot 95-25 in two games and outscored 9-1.

Next weekend, they are home to fellow strugglers Colgate before taking on conference leaders Cornell.
