Say hello to SMU, the Student Media Union

Campus Community:

We are writing to eagerly announce the creation of Union College’s Student Media Union, fondly referred to as SMU. SMU is comprised of Union’s student-driven media outlets, ranging from news and entertainment organizations to more artistically based publications.

Groups similar to the Student Media Union have existed intermittently on campus since the Publications Board at the turn of the twentieth century and the Undergraduate Media Board of the 1920s. Such historical precedence reinforces the importance of a contemporary alliance.

As of this time, SMU consists of The Idol, Concordiensis, WRUC 89.7 FM, TVUC, THE UNION BOOK, and The Dutch Oven. Collectively, we have chosen to resurrect such an outlet in hopes of achieving certain goals inherent to each of our individual organizations.

Our aims are simple:
- To reach the campus community more efficiently through student media collaboration
– To offer inter-organizational aid for individual projects and/or difficulties
– To provide a platform for quality and consistency by terms of the inevitable changes in years to come
– To garner respect for the dedication and efforts of our constituent members

We are not requesting any funding as an organization; we simply wished to announce our identity. As the school year unfolds, we hope that you will come to know us amicably and recognize our collaborative work as an asset to the Union College community.
