Director of Union Athletics Department Jim McLaughlin announced this week that a Women’s Golf Club will be receiving varsity, Liberty League and NCAA Division III status next fall and is currently looking for members.

She is looking to recruiting new members and organize the team for practices in the spring.

The team will practice locally at the Mohawk Golf Club in Schenectady and will compete against teams from Hobart William Smith, Vassar and St. Lawrence.

Several factors contributed to the development of a women’s team at Union, including the college’s membership in the Liberty League, access to a local golf facility and support from Union athletics and administrators.

“One of the big focuses of the team is the fact that Mohawk was so accommodating to us and that being only a few miles from here, it is a premiere golf course. There are a lot of Union alumni who play golf there, so it is a good connection to Union,” said Burt.

According to Burt, there are currently ten members of the team who have already been to the Mohawk Golf Club to practice and have their skill levels assessed.
