This Saturday, Union hosted fourteen colleges and universities from the northeast for the regional competition of the Intercollegiate Ethics Bowl, in which teams of students debated fifteen cases about ethical issues. Members of Union’s team are pictured above.

Union College hosted the Northeast Regional Ethics Bowl on Saturday, November 12. 16 teams from 14 colleges and universities competed; they debated cases ranging from the voting rights of college students to the treatment of endangered pink river dolphins in Brazil, from raising children without gender roles to how we treat the bodies of the dead.
Union’s team was in the top 8 after the morning matches, and thus progressed to the elimination matches in the afternoon. Union was eliminated by Marist College in the closest of the quarterfinal matches: a split decision, in which two judges voted for Marist and one judge voted for Union. Marist went all the way to the final match, and was defeated by Dartmouth — this was also a split decision.

The Northeast region usually gets 4 bids for the national competition in the spring. If Union does not receive a bid — we are ranked 5th — we will look for other opportunities to compete during winter term.

This is the final ranking (with W-L-T over ballots then point differentials as necessary to rank teams):

1. Dartmouth College
2. Marist College A
3. Colgate University (12–3–0)
4. Villanova University (9–4–2)
5. Union College (7–4–1, +23)
6. St. John’s University (7–4–1, +8)
7. Marist College B (5–7–0)
8. Moravian College (4–7–1)
