Tonight at 6 p.m., Bill Rasmussen, also known as “the George Washington of ESPN,” will be speaking in the Nott Memorial.
Rasmussen founded ESPN in 1979 after being fired from the New England Whalers Communications department.
He worked with his son to found “The Worldwide Leader in Sports,” a dream that came entirely from Rasmussen’s passion for media and sports, combined with his personal drive to reach his goals.
President of Speakers Forum Mike Mullen ‘14 is responsible in a large part for the upcoming visit of Rasmussen.
Mullen said, “You can expect Bill to discuss his life before and after ESPN…and his new book, Sports Junkies Rejoice: The Birth of ESPN.”
The book describes in vivid detail the effort that was put into the development of ESPN. It discusses the dedication of Rasmussen and his son and the reliance they had on the passion of America’s sports fans.
Rasmussen will also be signing copies of his book at the event, a great gift idea for the sports-crazed parent. Rasmussen “loves talking to college students who will be setting out on their own to do something great in the world,” and according to Mullen, “He is the kind of guy that will inspire students to do what they are passionate about not matter what obstacles may arise.”
There has already been a lot of talk about the coming of Rasmussen.
Reed Houston ‘16 says, “Since I watch a ton of ESPN it’ll be really cool to see the guy who actually started it all.” Houston was also intrigued when he found out that Rasmussen’s presentation includes very early images from ESPN’s first years that not many people have seen before.
This visit by Rasmussen is just one of the many ideas that are being discussed Speaker’s Forum.
