Reamer movie preview: My Week with Marilyn

In the summer of 1956, Sir Lawrence Olivier cast Marilyn Monroe in his film, The Prince and the Showgirl.

Twenty-three year old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), determined to make it into the film business, worked on the set as a lowly assistant.

An account of that summer was found in the diary of playwright Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), Monroe’s husband.

Forty years later, it was published as The Prince, the Showgirl, and Me. However, one week of the shoot was unaccounted for.

My Week with Marilyn tells the story of that week.

When Miller leaves England, Colin takes Marilyn on a tour around London where she is able to escape the pressures of her Hollywood lifestyle for a little while.

Michelle Williams, who stars as Monroe, was praised by critics for her ability to capture both the starlet’s allure and vulnerability in her acting.

Williams later won a Golden Globe and was nominated for an Academy Award for her work.

While Williams undoubtedly shines, her mesmerizing performance does not entirely make up for the film’s average script and plot, which would otherwise bore the audience to death.

Eddie Redmayne, who stars as Colin Clark, has an average performance that does not captivate the audience’s attention, even when he is the main focus of the scene.

This could merely be an illusion, however, as Williams’ performance sucks all of the attention from the audience.

We inevitably fall in love with Williams as Marilyn, and sometimes forget that there are other characters in the film.
