The dessert combines spices like nutmeg, cloves, and cinnamon with sweet raisins and molasses to create a melt-in-your mouth flavor extravaganza. Hermits, which are shaped into brownie-like squares, are great if you are entertaining a big crowd or if you are at home enjoying a hot beverage any time of day. These are the perfect dessert for those of you looking for a twist on your typical holiday gingerbread man. You’ll want to make a couple batches of these Hermits so you can stay in all fall and winter to enjoy them!

Ingredients

  • 1 c. sugar
  • 2/3 c. butter
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 1 egg
  • ½ c. molasses
  • 1 c. raisins
  • 2 Tbsp. milk
  • 1 tsp. baking soda
  • 1 tsp. nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. cinnamon
  • ½ tsp. cloves
  • 2 c. flour

For simple icing:

  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tsp. milk
  • 1 c. confection sugar
  • Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix the dry ingredients together in a large bowl. In a separate bowl, cream together the butter, eggs, and milk. Once combined, mix in the dry ingredients a little at a time. Fold the raisins into the mixture. Try not to over mix. Pour into a lined or greased 9×13 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 13 to 16 minutes or until set. For softer hermits take out when set but toothpick does not come out clean. Cool completely in pan. Once cooled, combine the simple icing ingredients in a bowl. Drizzle over the top. Set in fridge or at room temperature. Cut into squares and enjoy! Makes 24 servings.
